The First Somali Conference in Melbourne was held at Melbourne University on the 26th of Sept. 2009. This conference was sponsored by Bakaal World wide money transfer and Melbourne University's National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies.

The Keynote speech of the Conference was delivered by HE Ambassador Mahomoud Olow Barrow who is based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Other speakers at the conference were Hamid Ibrahim, CEO of Bakaal Inc. who provided a detailed coverage of the role of education in rebuilding Somalia.
